Katikkiro Mayiga Urges Early Leadership Training to Shape Africa’s Future

The Katikkiro  of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has emphasized the importance of nurturing strong leadership qualities in children from an early age, noting that this is key to shaping a better future for Africa.

Mayiga made these remarks at the Buganda Kingdom headquarters in Bulange, Mengo, on Tuesday while hosting student leaders from primary and junior schools under the Uganda National Primary and Junior School Head Prefects Association. The students presented a financial contribution of over Shs 2 million to  Buganda Kingdom.

Speaking during the event, Mayiga urged parents and teachers to intentionally prepare children—especially in leadership skills—while they are still young.

He stressed that Africa faces a significant leadership challenge, citing concerns such as lack of integrity, accountability, and selflessness among many leaders.

“We face a serious leadership challenge in Africa. Many leaders lack integrity, accountability, and a spirit of service. We must begin preparing children early, instilling values like honesty, transparency, and sacrifice so that we can secure a better future,” he said.

Mayiga further encouraged student leaders to understand their responsibilities, make sound decisions, and develop problem-solving skills to earn respect from their peers.

Mayiga also commended parents and educators for their role in mentoring children, particularly in building confidence, determination, communication skills, and cultural awareness. Mayiga applauded the students for their contribution, describing it as a sign of

responsibility and commitment to the development of Buganda.

The Kingdom Minister of Local Government, Kabaka’s Tours and Diaspora Affairs, Joseph Kawuki, congratulated the student leaders on assuming leadership roles at a young age. He urged them to use the experience gained to shape a brighter future while remaining focused on their academic studies.

The Association’s Vice Chairperson, Prince Victor Ssansa, expressed gratitude to the Buganda Kingdom for continuously engaging young people and equipping them with knowledge about their heritage and leadership.

Meanwhile, the Associations Chairperson, Dielah Nabatanzi from Gayaza Junior School, thanked God for the life of the Kabaka and extended best wishes on his 71st birthday. She praised the Kingdom for providing exemplary leadership that inspires the younger generation.

The event was also attended by the Buganda Kingdom Minister for Social Services (Education, Health) and the Office of the Nnaabagereka, Choltilda Nakate Kikomeko; Kingdom Spokesperson, Israel Kazibwe Kitooke; teachers and various student leaders.
